Corridos tumbados are a modern subgenre of Mexican corridos that blend traditional corrido storytelling with trap, hip-hop, and reggaetón production elements. The name roughly translates to "knocked-down corridos" or "laid-back corridos" — the traditional form, remixed with bass-heavy beats, Auto-Tune, and lyrics that speak to young Mexicans and Mexican-Americans on both sides of the border. Artists like Natanael Cano, Junior H, and Peso Pluma brought the genre from Sinaloa street corners to the Billboard charts.
Where Corridos Tumbados Come From
Traditional corridos are narrative ballads — the Mexican equivalent of folk storytelling songs. Junior H brought an emotional, almost emo-influenced sensibility — his corridos tumbados lean melancholy and introspective.
Peso Pluma took the genre global with "Ella Baila Sola," which hit #1 on multiple international charts in 2023 and became one of the most-streamed Latin songs in history.
