Who Was St. Vincent de Paul?
Vincent de Paul was born in 1581 in France to a peasant family. He was captured by Turkish pirates in his youth and spent two years as a slave in Tunisia — an experience that shaped his understanding of suffering from the inside. After his conversion deepened, he devoted himself to the poor and marginalized, founding the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) in 1625 and co-founding the Daughters of Charity in 1633.
He served at the French court as almoner, using his position to advocate for prisoners, orphans, galley slaves, and the rural poor. He died in 1660 and was canonized in 1737. His feast day is September 27th. He's the patron saint of charitable societies, hospitals, prisoners, and volunteers.
