San Esteban was the first. The first person to die for the Christian faith after the resurrection — a deacon of the early Church, full of wisdom and the Holy Spirit, whose face "shone like that of an angel" during his trial. He was stoned to death while praying for the very people killing him: "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." Watching from the sidelines, holding the cloaks of the executioners, was a young man named Saul of Tarsus — who would later become St. Paul.
First martyr. Full of courage. Praying for his enemies at the moment of his death. That's San Esteban, and if you know someone named Stephen or Esteban — or someone who carries that same stubborn, principled, willing-to-stand-alone energy — a St. Stephen gift is exactly right.
Who Is St. Stephen?
St. Stephen was one of the first seven deacons of the early Church, chosen specifically to serve the community and assist the apostles. He's described in Acts of the Apostles as "full of faith and the Holy Spirit" and as someone who performed signs and wonders among the people. When he was brought before the Sanhedrin on false charges of blasphemy, he delivered a sweeping sermon recounting the history of salvation — and was condemned and stoned to death, becoming the protamartyr (first martyr) of the Church.
His feast day is December 26th — the day after Christmas. He's the patron saint of deacons, stonemasons, headache sufferers, and horses. In many Central European traditions, December 26th is St. Stephen's Day, celebrated with horse-racing and outdoor processions.
