When a woman in the family is pregnant, the prayers get louder. Abuela starts her novenas. The baby shower has candles. Someone somewhere pins a San Gerardo medal to the crib or tucks a prayer card into the hospital bag. St. Gerard Majella is the patron saint of expectant mothers, childbirth, and unborn children — and his intercession is one of the most widely sought in the entire Latin American Catholic tradition.
A St. Gerard gift for a pregnant woman or new mother is not just thoughtful. It is one of the most direct, faith-rooted ways to say: I am praying for you and this baby every single day.
Who Is St. Gerard Majella?
Gerard Majella was an Italian Redemptorist brother who lived from 1726 to 1755 — dying at only 29 years old. He was known for extraordinary mystical gifts, including the ability to read souls and bilocate. His connection to expectant mothers comes from a specific incident: he accidentally left his handkerchief at the home of a young woman, and when it was returned to him, he told her to keep it — that one day she would have need of it. She did: years later, during a difficult labor, she held the handkerchief and delivered safely.
His reputation for interceding in dangerous or difficult pregnancies spread rapidly. He was beatified in 1893 and canonized in 1904. His feast day is October 16th.
Why Latino Mothers Invoke St. Gerard
Pregnancy and childbirth prayer is deeply embedded in Latino Catholic culture — mothers pray novenas during pregnancy, pin medals to crib sheets, and name children for the saints who "helped" during difficult deliveries. San Gerardo is one of the most invoked saints in this context, particularly in Mexican, Colombian, and Caribbean communities.
Giving a St. Gerard gift to an expectant mother connects her to a tradition of prayer and protection that runs through generations.
Best St. Gerard Gifts for Expectant Mothers
St. Gerard Medal or Pendant — The most common gift. A medal worn during pregnancy, often pinned to the hospital bag or held during labor. Sterling silver or gold-tone for a special occasion.
St. Gerard Baby Shower Gift Set — A medal, a prayer card with his novena for safe delivery, and a small white candle. Tuck it in a drawstring bag and include a note. It will be kept with the baby's first items.
Personalized "Blessed Are Those Who Wait" Pregnancy Journal — A quality journal for a mother-to-be, paired with a St. Gerard prayer card for the inside cover. Space to record prayers, feelings, and milestones through pregnancy.
St. Gerard Crib Medal — A medal or ornament designed to hang from a crib or car seat. A practical, faith-rooted protective piece for the baby's space.
"Mother and Child" Devotional Print — A beautifully illustrated print of St. Gerard with a mother and infant, or of Mary and the Christ child — for a nursery or family bedroom.
St. Gerard Novena Prayer Set — A 9-day novena card set for safe delivery. Many mothers pray these in the final weeks of pregnancy.
When a new baby is coming, San Gerardo is already praying. Give him as a gift before the birth — he'll be there for it.
