If St. Augustine is the most influential theologian in Western Christianity, San Ambrosio of Milan is the man who baptized him. Ambrose was Bishop of Milan at a time when the Roman Empire was collapsing and the Church needed a spine — and he provided one, standing down emperors, reforming liturgy, composing hymns that are still sung today, and transforming what it meant to be a bishop from a political appointment to a spiritual vocation.
He's not the most famous saint in most Latino households, but for those who study theology, work in education, or are drawn to the intersection of faith and public life — San Ambrosio is the model.
Who Was St. Ambrose?
Ambrose was born around 340 AD to a Roman Christian family and was trained as a lawyer and administrator. He was appointed governor of the province of Milan — not yet baptized, not a priest — when the Bishop of Milan died. The people, deeply divided between orthodox and Arian factions, began shouting his name for bishop. He refused. They insisted. He eventually accepted, was baptized, ordained, and consecrated bishop all within eight days.
What followed was a remarkable episcopate. He confronted Emperor Theodosius directly after a massacre in Thessalonica, refusing him Communion until he did public penance — and the emperor complied. He composed the Te Deum (still used in the Church today) and developed the Ambrosian chant tradition. And he preached the sermons that led Augustine of Hippo to faith.
His feast day is December 7th. He's the patron saint of bishops, bees, beekeepers, students, learning, and Milan.
