Seek First the Kingdom: The Most Counterintuitive Instruction in the Sermon on the Mount
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. — Matthew 6:33
The verse comes at the end of a section about worry — about food, clothing, the necessities of life. Jesus has been making the argument that these things are provided for, that anxious striving doesn't add a single hour to your life, that you are worth more to God than the birds or the lilies. And his conclusion is: so seek first the kingdom.
It's a radical reorientation of priority. Not: earn your security first, then worship. Not: get stable, then you can afford to think about righteousness. The instruction inverts the order that anxious humans would naturally choose: put the kingdom first, and the necessary things follow.
What "Seeking First" Actually Requires
This verse is not asking you to be impractical. Jesus isn't telling the family that can't pay rent to stop thinking about rent. He's talking about what gets first place in orientation — what you organize your life around, what determines your decisions at the level of values.
Seeking first the kingdom means: when there's a conflict between kingdom values and personal comfort, kingdom goes first. When there's a choice between self-advancement and faithfulness to what God is asking, faithfulness goes first. When the opportunity is tempting and the calling is less immediately rewarding, the calling goes first.
This is extremely demanding in practice. It requires a kind of daily recalibration — and a genuine trust that the "all these things will be added" part is actually true.
