Faith Over Fear: What It Actually Means to Choose It

Faith over fear is three words on a T-shirt, a mug, a bumper sticker. It's also one of the most demanding postures a human being can hold. The gap between the slogan and the lived practice is exactly where most of us live — somewhere between the declaration and the difficulty of actually meaning it.

Because fear is not abstract. Fear is the call you're waiting on. Fear is the appointment you haven't made because you don't want to know what they'll say. Fear is the conversation you keep postponing because you know it will hurt. Fear is the thing you wake up thinking about at 4am and can't put back in its box. Faith over fear doesn't dissolve any of that. It chooses a different response to it.

What Faith Over Fear Is Not

It's not the absence of fear. That's important to establish. The biblical figures celebrated for their faith are not people who never felt afraid. The Psalms are full of fear — David expressing it, naming it, bringing it to God unfiltered. Paul lists his anxieties in his letters. Jesus in Gethsemane asked if the cup could pass.

Faith over fear doesn't mean you didn't feel it. It means you moved anyway. It means the fear was real and the faith was also real, and you chose to act from the faith.

It's also not positive thinking. Positive thinking says: things will probably be fine. Faith says: I don't know how this will end, but I trust the One who does. The difference is enormous.

What Choosing It Actually Looks Like

In Latino families, faith over fear often looks like someone who crossed a border anyway. Who started a business in a country that wasn't yet familiar. Who went to the doctor for the thing they'd been avoiding. Who stayed in the marriage when it was hard. Who told the truth when lying would have been easier. None of these were performed without fear. They were performed with it — and with faith larger than the fear.

The practice of faith over fear is daily. It's the decision made in small moments that trains the capacity for the larger ones. Every day you choose trust over anxiety in something small, you're building the muscle for when something large comes.
