When you tell someone you're from Chihuahua, the first thing many people think of is the dog. This is annoying. Chihuahua is the largest state in Mexico — larger than some European countries — and one of the most distinctive: the high desert of the Chihuahuan Desert, the Sierra Madre Occidental, the logging towns of the mountains, the agricultural valleys, the city of Chihuahua and the border city of Ciudad Juárez. What makes Chihuahua state distinctive?
Chihuahua is the largest of Mexico's 31 states, covering approximately 247,000 square kilometers in northern Mexico — larger than the United Kingdom. It is divided by its geography: the eastern lowlands (desert, agriculture, cattle ranching) and the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains in the west, home to the Copper Canyon system (Barrancas del Cobre), one of the world's most spectacular canyon systems — larger and deeper in places than the Grand Canyon. The state capital is the city of Chihuahua; the largest city is Ciudad Juárez, directly across the border from El Paso, Texas. Chihuahua has a border culture deeply intertwined with Texas and New Mexico — the border region is its own cultural zone. Norteño music originated here and in neighboring Sonora and Tamaulipas. The state is historically associated with Pancho Villa (División del Norte), whose División del Norte operated from here during the Mexican Revolution. Chihuahua cuisine includes iconic dishes such as discada (mixed meat cooked on a plow disc), red and green chile, and its own style of gordita.

For Mexican-Americans from Chihuahua — a significant portion given the state's border proximity to Texas and New Mexico — state pride is a specific dimension of Mexican identity. Not just Mexican, but norteño, but fronterizo, but chihuahuense. That specificity is worth wearing.
